DEAR KASSIDY

 June 11 2025

Dear 8th grade Kassidy

I know that you're having a hard time with your stepdad right now. He doesn't listen to anything you say or how you feel. When mom broke her ribs by “falling down the stairs” you knew it was a lie. He acts like you don't have feelings and like you're more of something to show off than a living human. You tried everything to impress him but you never felt like you were good enough. He treated you more like a sibling than ever trying to act like a father.

So, you started to stay in your room longer. You went upstairs less and less. You would put off getting food because you didn't want to see him. No matter what you felt like he was always disappointed in who you were so you started to open up to mom. The turning point was when he came home drunk and  you heard him banging around upstairs, the only thought in your head was “he was going to hurt mom again”. You ran up the stairs and climbed in her bed, her holding you through your panic attack. He slept on the couch that night and you didn't leave your moms side. Mom and him started to get more and more distant over time before she finally told you to pack your stuff.

It seems like this time was all bad but it taught you many things. You stand up for yourself more and you don't feel the need to prove you are good enough to everyone anymore. You are happy in your home again which felt like it would be impossible with him.

You are so smart and amazing and you can do anything you put your mind to. I promise it gets better. Mom has helped more than she realizes and you two have gotten really close again. You can do this, its not your time to give up.

Sincerely,

Sophomore you
